By The Real Rider Cup 2021 rider Ferrin Peterson
From The Real Rider Cup website: Ferrin Peterson is a professional jockey competing on the Mid-Atlantic circuit, and a veterinarian. After completing her veterinary degree from UC Davis, she headed east to dedicate herself to her riding career. She enjoys following her race horses as they become broodmares or pick up a new athletic career. She will be riding the accomplished gelding All the Way Jose, who made just over $450,000 in his career. He is currently competing in pony club jumper shows and junior horse field master chases. He is in training for the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover and is owned by Dr. Erica Gaertner, who is a former steeplechase jockey and current sports medicine doctor. Peterson looks forward to showcasing his versatility to support the efforts of retraining and rehoming OTTBs.
“All the Way Jose and I crossed paths when I was asking around for a mount for The Real Rider Cup. I had recently become friends with his owner, Erica Gaertner, and she told me I could ride him. Little did I realize just how special my future mount was.
I come from a flat racing background and did not know that Jose was famous. Jose is a Grade 1 winning champion, bred and trained by one of the most respected steeplechase trainers, Jonathan Sheppard, and last year’s winner of The Real Rider Cup. Once I started promoting Jose on social media to raise funding for the event, I had numerous people reach out to me either because they used to ride him or they had been one of his countless fans watching him from the sideline.
Jose is a class act around the jumper course, and he appears to get offended and slightly careless when the jumps are too low as if we did not know what he is capable of. I can see why it is that Erica and countless others adore him!”
UPDATE: Ferrin and Jose jumped their Real Rider Cup course today, June 7th – see some photo highlights on the Real Rider Cup Facebook page.
