Despite the challenges of an abbreviated season and limited access, NSA Official Artist Sam Robinson put together a collection of work inspired by the 2020 steeplechasing season.
Since 2018, Sam Robinson, has presented an art show of paintings, commemorating the season, at the NSA awards dinner in January. This year the pandemic presented unique challenges to Robinson, both in attending races and in displaying and selling his art.
“Against the Odds” is Robinson’s virtual exhibition of paintings “inspired by the races held in spite of the pandemic.” As Robinson was limited in the number of races he could attend in person, many of his paintings from 2020 were based on photos from Alice Porter and from the NSA’s Official Photographer Tod Marks. His in-person paintings are from the Virginia Fall Races, the Shawan Downs Point to Point, and the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup Races.
“American Steeplechasing,” the annual NSA Yearbook, will again feature Robinson’s artwork, including a portrait of the 2020 Lonesome Glory award winner, Moscato, on the cover. Robinson also created a portrait of 2020 Leading Trainer Jonathan Sheppard, who recently announced his retirement, to include in the yearbook.
The entire “Against the Odds” collection can be seen at Robinson’s website: www.samrobinsonfineart.com. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the art work will benefit the NSA.
