Over Creek Stables’ Arrakis surged to the lead before the final fence and drew away to a 5 3/4-length victory under Roddy Mackenzie in the $25,000 Charleston Cup, feature race of the 19th annual Charleston Cup Steeplechase in South Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 11. Sue Sensor’s Sunshine Numbers, who had set the pace in his first start of the year, finished second, 2 3/4 lengths clear of Irvin S. Naylor’s Plenty Pocket in third.
Trained by Julie Gomena, Arrakis ran the Charleston Cup’s 2 1/4 miles in 4:11 on a Stono Ferry Race Course rated as firm.
An allowance winner on the flat at Monmouth Park last year, Arrakis has made a successful transition to jump racing this fall. The five-year-old Royal Academy gelding won a maiden claiming hurdle at the Foxfield Fall Races on Sept. 30 and then was third in the $25,000 Budweiser Holiday Cup allowance hurdle, the featured race of the Aiken Fall Steeplechase on Oct. 27.
