George E. Chase Sr., one of the founders of the Atlanta Steeplechase and a longtime supporter of the Georgia event, died Monday, Sept. 16.
In addition to his support of the Atlanta Steeplechase, he was a steeplechase owner who campaigned Census, winner of the first Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase in 1986. The Speak John gelding, trained by Janet Elliot, was the National Steeplechase Association’s leading earner in 1984 and 1986.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 20 at Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Dr. SW, Atlanta. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to his wife, Jan Perdue Chase, or his son and daughter-in-law, George and Natalie Chase.
