Rosbrian Farm’s Caldbeck, who kicked off his 2018 three-year-old championship with a victory in Far Hills’ Gladstone Stakes, has been nominated to a return trip to the New Jersey race course for the $75,000 Harry E. Harris Stakes for four-year-olds.
The new stakes race for four-year-olds is one of two notable changes on the Far Hills program for Oct. 19. The Harris was a maiden hurdle last year, and the New Jersey Hunt Cup, formerly a timber race, will be a $50,000 flat race at 1½ miles on the Far Hills turf.
Purchased by Rosbrian before his arrival in the U.S., Calbeck was trained to his Gladstone victory by leading Irish trainer Gordon Elliott. Transferred to Ricky Hendriks, Caldbeck sealed his championship with a five-length victory in a Steeplechase of Charleston allowance hurdle limited to three-year-olds.
Hendriks has kept Caldbeck on a limited schedule of flat races this season. He finished second in maiden specials weights at Delaware Park and Colonial Downs in August. Hendriks also nominated Armata Stables’ maiden winner Zanzi Win and You’re No Better, a maiden in six starts over fences.
Trainer Elliott nominated Crocodile Pockets Syndicates’ Lethal Steps, who also was nominated for the $100,000 Foxbrook Champion Hurdle. Lethal Steps most recently finished second in a modest-level allowance hurdle in Ireland.
Another dual nominee is Riverdee Stable’s Snowie Hill, the winner of Colonial Downs’ Randolph D. Rouse Handicap who also was nominated to the $75,000 Peapack Stakes for fillies and mares by trainer F. Hill Parker.
Leading trainer Jack Fisher nominated three contenders to the 2 1/8-mile Harris. Heading his nominees is Hyggelig Haven’s Cracker Factory, who finished sixth in Belmont Park’s William Entenmann Memorial Novice Stakes in his American debut on Sept. 18.
Fisher also nominated Rather Be Racing’s Our Legend, ninth in Saratoga Race Course’s Jonathan Kiser Novice Stakes in July, and Gill Johnston’s Knockholt, a maiden winner at Colonial Downs on Aug. 30.
Leslie Young nominated Silverton Hill’s Bodes Well and her Emerald Rocket. Bodes Well won a Colonial Downs ratings handicap on Aug. 17, and recent import Emerald Rocket was a maiden over hurdles in England.
