Racing Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Fishback will be the Carolina Cup Racing Association’s special guest on Saturday to mark the 30th anniversary of his second of three victories in the Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup aboard fellow Hall of Fame member Flatterer.
Flatterer, bred by Bill Pape and trainer Jonathan Sheppard, won the Colonial Cup four years in a row, with English jockey John Francome riding the first in 1983 and Fishback in the irons for the subsequent three victories.
Fishback won his first Colonial Cup in 1977 aboard Augustin Stables’ Cafe Prince for Sheppard. Like Flatterer, Cafe Prince is a member of the Racing Hall of Fame.
Fishback was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1992. He was the sport’s champion jockey five times and is tied for third by career National Steeplechase Association wins at 301.
He is the winningest jockey in the history of the Springdale Race Course in Camden, S.C., where the Colonial Cup has been raced each year since 1970. In all, he has 29 Springdale victories, including four editions of the Carolina Cup.
