A well-matched field of timber competitors will take to the course on Sunday for the $25,000 Winterthur Bowl, the featured race of the annual Winterthur Races on the grounds of the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library in Delaware.
Super Saturday, campaigned by champion owner Irv Naylor, will try to have a super Sunday in the 3 1/4-mile race over timber fences. Trained by Kathy Neilson, the seven-year-old most recently finished second in the Alfred M. Hunt steeplechase at the Middleburg Spring Races on April 23. Sean McDermott will ride.
Naylor also will be represented by Top Man Michael, who is making a transition from hurdle racing after missing the 2015 season. Cyril Murphy tapped Gus Dahl to ride.
Also entering the Winterthur Bowl from the Alfred M. Hunt is Jeremy Batoff’s Certain Swagger, who finished third. Trainer William Dowling picked champion jockey Paddy Young to ride.
Welcome Here Farm’s Be Great will be looking to improve on a third-place finish in last year’s Winterthur Bowl. In his most recent start, Be Great won the Genesee Valley Hunt Cup last October. Annie Yeager will ride for trainer Todd McKenna.
Racing Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard will send out Bill Pape’s Nationbuilder, who has made the transition from a successful hurdle career. In his most recent start, Nationbuilder fell at My Lady’s Manor. Darren Nagle will ride.
