Armata Stables’ Cornhusker, one of the leading candidates for the 2015 timber championship, heads a full field for the $50,000 New Jersey Hunt Cup at the Far Hills Races on Saturday.
Trained by Alicia Murphy, Cornhusker will be attempting to move forward from a fourth-place finish in the $35,000 National Sporting Library & Museum Cup last Saturday. Top timber jockey Mark Beecher will ride the English-bred, who won the Mason Houghland Memorial at the Iroquois Steeplechase on May 9.
Leading owner Irv Naylor entered Tax Ruling and Super Saturday. A two-time Grade 1 winner over hurdles, Tax Ruling finished second in the Mason Houghland Memorial for the third straight time.
Super Saturday finished fifth in the National Sporting Library after winning a timber allowance at the Carolina Cup races on March 28. James Slater rides Tax Ruling for trainer Billy Meister, and Gerard Galligan returns on Super Saturday for trainer Kathy Neilson.
Trainer Christopher Read tapped Darren Nagle to take over the mount on Kinross Farm’s Schoolhouse Woods, the Willowdale Steeplechase winner who refused at the start of the National Sporting Library.
Champion trainer Jack Fisher again will play a strong hand in the 3 1/4-mile race over timber fences. Arcadia Stable’s veteran Delta Park won the 2011 New Jersey Hunt Cup and also was victorious in last year’s Pennsylvania Hunt Cup. Sean McDermott rides Delta Park, who finished fifth in the Willowdale Steeplechase in his only 2015 start.
Fisher also entered maiden winners Two’s Company for Bruton Street-US and Hockey Pop for his mother. Connor Hankin rides Two’s Company, and Paddy Young will be aboard Hockey Pop.
