Black and Blue Stable’s Monstaleur closed relentlessly on pacesetter Grand Manan and was up in the last strides to secure a rare dead-heat for the win in the $25,000 Willowdale Steeplechase, the featured race of the 24th annual Willowdale Steeplechase in Kennett Square, Pa., on Sunday.
Donald Reuwer’s Grand Manan led for much of the 3 1/2 mile amateur allowance steeplechase and cleared the final fence with the lead under Fritz Boniface. But Forrest Kelly-trained Monstaleur was moving fastest of all and seized a winning tie under Lia McGuirk.
Bruton Street-US’s Ballylifen finished third, 20 1/2 lengths farther back, and Organisateur was fourth.
Monstaleur and Grand Manan ran the Willowdale Steeplechase distance in 7:33.20 on firm turf. Each earned $9,750 from the combined first- and second-place purses.
