Jacqueline Ohrstrom’s Demonstrative, current leader in the National Steeplechase Association’s 2014 earnings standings, will meet 2013 Eclipse Award winner Divine Fortune in Belmont Park’s $150,000 Lonesome Glory Handicap (Gr. 1) on Thursday, Sept. 18.
Both are winners of Grade 1 races this year, and Demonstrative will carry the 158-pound highweight after his professional victory in Saratoga Race Course’s $150,000 New York Turf Writers Cup (Gr. 1) on Aug. 25. Bill Pape’s Divine Fortune, winner of the $150,000 Calvin Houghland Iroquois (Gr. 1) in May, was weighted at 154.
Robbie Walsh returns aboard Demonstrative for trainer Richard Valentine in the 2 1/2-mile Lonesome Glory. Darren Nagle, sidelined for much of the current season with a broken leg after a training accident in March, will ride Divine Fortune. Nagle was in the saddle for Divine Fortune’s brilliant victory in last fall’s Grand National (Gr. 1) at Far Hills, N.J.
Divine Fortune will be coupled in the wagering with two other members of Racing Hall of Fame member Jonathan Sheppard’s barn. Sheppard’s Barnstorming, second in the New York Turf Writers, will be ridden by Willie McCarthy, currently the sport’s top jockey by wins and earnings. Bernie Dalton will be aboard Sheppard’s Bluegrass Summer, third in the Michael G. Walsh Novice Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 14.
Sheppard also will send out Parker’s Project, who is owned by Edward Swyer’s Hudson River Farms. Sidelined since winning the 2012 Marcellus Frost Stakes at the Iroquois Steeplechase, he will be ridden by Ross Geraghty.
Jack Fisher, bidding for his third straight leading trainer title, will saddle Andre Brewster’s and Sheila J. Williams’ All Together, who finished fourth in the New York Turf Writers. He finished second, beaten a nose, in last year’s Lonesome Glory. Sam Jones has the mount.
Leading owner Irv Naylor will be represented by For Non Stop, an Irish-bred who finished sixth in the New York Turf Writers. Trainer Cyril Murphy named Kieran Norris to ride.
Completing the field is Gregg Ryan’s Spy in the Sky, who was taken for $30,000 from a Saratoga optional claiming hurdle on Aug. 20. New trainer George Weaver, a leading flat horseman in New York, named Tom Foley to ride the veteran Grade 1 winner.
