Warren R. Dempsey, a steeplechase owner who served as the National Steeplechase Association’s treasurer in 2001 and 2002, died Thursday, June 1, in Aiken, S.C., where he had resided for several years. He was 71.
He served as a member of the NSA’s Board of Directors from 1997 through 2002. He and his wife, Karen, formerly resided in Monkton, Md., and had horses with trainers Tom Voss and Jonathan Sheppard.
In all, his horses made 189 NSA starts and earned nearly $600,000. He campaigned 1998 Atlanta Cup winner Soaringoverseattle, who won twice at Saratoga and earned $154,450 in NSA races while trained by Voss.
He also owned War Talk, who won the 2001 Little Everglades Stakes for novices when trained by Sheppard. War Talk earned $138,523 in NSA races.
