Edgar T. Cato, a steeplechase owner and a former member of the National Steeplechase Association Board of Directors, died at his home in Aiken, S.C., on Tuesday, June 28. He was 86.
Mr. Cato was the owner of Brigadoon Stable and in recent years raced Erin Go Bragh, winner of the 2008 New Jersey Hunt Cup. He served on the NSA board from 2005 through 2009. Master of the Flat Branch Foxhounds, he also was an avid sailor and pilot.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Bryan Cato; two daughters, Christine Anne Cato of Aiken and Amanda Barnes Bryan of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Edgar Thomas Cato III of Marshall, N.C. and Derham Vail Cato of Nashville; two grandchildren, Clairissa Avyn Cato and Keenan Seigler Cato; and a brother, Wayland Henry Cato Jr. of Charleston, S.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation in Aiken. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
