Donald Reuwer Jr.’s Grand Manan, front-running winner of last year’s Genesee Valley Hunt Cup, has been nominated for a return engagement in the 3 1/2-mile race in Geneseo, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The $30,000 Genesee Valley Hunt Cup attracted nine nominees. Last year, William Meister-trained Grand Manan followed up his Genesee Valley victory with a win in the International Gold Cup, a timber stakes race in The Plains, Va.
The eight-year-old Giant’s Causeway gelding is still looking for his first 2017 win. In his most recent start, he finished second after setting the early pace in the Willowdale Steeplechase in Pennsylvania on May 14.
Jack Fisher, who has a commanding lead in the trainer standings, nominated Charles C. Fenwick Jr.’s Doc Cebu, the nine-length Willowdale Steeplechase winner. Never worse than second in two starts over hurdles and three over timber fences, Doc Cebu scored his maiden timber victory at the My Lady’s Manor meet in Maryland on April 15.
Also nominated from the Willowdale Steeplechase were Rosbrian Farm’s Class Brahms, who finished third; Northwood Stables’ Naturally Won, fourth; and Irv Naylor’s Super Saturday, fifth.
