A change in The Jockey Club’s rule book will assure steeplechase and other Thoroughbred owners that horses they retire will never again return to racing.
Under The Jockey Club’s former rule, known as Sold Without Pedigree, a retired horse’s foal registration was canceled, and the horse could not be used for breeding purposes. The Jockey Club amended the rule to create a new category, Retired from Racing. Under this provision, a horse’s foal papers will be stamped Retired from Racing, and the horse can be used for breeding purposes.
