Clarke Ohrstrom’s Kisser N Run, the reigning champion in the National Steeplechase Association’s filly and mare division, has been nominated for a chance to win the Far Hills Races’ $75,000 Peapack Stakes for a third consecutive year.
The Peapack is one of four stakes races on the Oct. 18 program at Moorland Farms in central New Jersey. In all, $530,000 in purses will be offered. The Peapack traditionally kicks off the festivities with a 1 p.m. post time.
Trained by Richard Valentine, the six-year-old Pleasant Tap mare used the Peapack to jump-start her championship campaign last year. She subsequently won the Crown Royal Stakes at the Steeplechase at Callaway to take the Life’s Illusion Filly and Mare Championship.
She began the current season with a win in the Georgia Cup in April and most recently finished second in Saratoga Race Course’s Mrs. Ogden Phipps Stakes on Aug. 7.
Valentine, who also handles leading Grand National (Gr. 1) prospect Demonstrative, nominated Ohrstrom’s homebred Delphinus to the Peapack. Winless over fences, she most recently finished seventh in a maiden hurdle for fillies and mares at Fair Hill, Md., on May 24.
Kisser N Run will have plenty of opposition in the Peapack. Leading owner Irv Naylor nominated Bittersweetheart, winner of the Iroquois Steeplechase’s Margaret Currey Henley on May 10. Trained by Leslie Young, the seven-year-old mare finished third in Saratoga’s Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords on Aug. 28.
Riverdee Stable’s Lillehammer, third in the 2012 Peapack, was nominated for another shot at the 2 1/8-mile race over National Fences. She most recently finished sixth in the Mrs. Phipps, her only start this year.
Jennifer H. Pitts’ Bau Bai Gold impressed when she cut all the pace and won a Foxfield Fall maiden hurdle for fillies and mares in her first start over fences on Sept. 28. Owner-trainer Jonathan Sheppard’s E C’s Favorite finished third in that race.
