Amy Taylor Rowe’s Maserati slammed down the accelerator in Fair Hill’s stretch on Saturday and drew away to a dominant 5 1/4-length victory in the $45,000 Valentine Memorial Ratings Handicap.
Bruton Street US’s Scorpiancer closed late to nip Top Striker for second by a half-length. All the Way Jose finished fourth in a field of 11.
Trained by Leslie Young, Maserati ran the Valentine Memorial’s 2 1/4 miles in 4:11.60.
Jockey Paddy Young had the Queen’s Cup MPC ‘Chase winner at the back of the field early as Portrade cut the early fractions. Maserati moved into striking distance in midrace and launched his bid as Top Striker took aim on the leader. Bernie Dalton pressed Sue Sensor’s Top Striker to the lead over the last fence, but Maserati was moving fastest of all and seized the lead in Fair Hill’s stretch before drawing away.
Scorpiancer, ridden by Connor Hankin, closed late for the place spot.
