Leading owner Irv Naylor followed up a dream Saturday at the Virginia Gold Cup with a victory by his Top Man Michael in the $25,000 Winterthur Bowl open timber race, the featured contest of the Winterthur Races on Sunday.
After Naylor’s Charminster was victorious in the $75,000 David Semmes Memorial (Gr. 2) over National Fences, the record-setting owner won the Virginia Gold Cup with Ebanour, who is trained by Cyril Murphy and ridden by Gus Dahl. The owner-trainer-rider combination also accounted for the Winterthur Bowl when Top Man Michael went to the lead at the start and stayed there for 3 1/4 miles. He drew away to a 12-length victory, with Certain Swagger finishing second and Be Great third. Naylor’s Super Saturday finished fourth.
Top Man Michael, a seven-year-old making a transition from hurdles to timber racing, ran the distance in 6:51.20 on firm turf. The $16,250 in purses from the Winterthur Bowl raised Naylor’s weekend purses above $120,000.
