The National Steeplechase Association is soliciting proposals to provide high-definition video services for all of its race meets, with an initial one-year contract period extending from this coming fall through next spring.
The video services primarily will serve the stewards at approximately 30 race meets and will provide photo-finish capabilities at those meets. Initial expressions of intent to bid, accompanied by signed confidentiality agreements, are due by June 1, and the detailed proposals must be submitted by July 2.
“We are a highly visual sport, and high-quality, high-definition video is crucial to steeplechasing in so many ways,” NSA President Guy J. Torsilieri said. “At New York Racing Association facilities and our own meets that have adopted high-definition video, we have seen vividly the importance of these superior-quality images.”
Torsilieri said the NSA has received expressions of interest from both U.S. companies and overseas operations. The bidding process is being facilitated by a subcommittee of the NSA’s Promotion and Growth Committee, headed by Virginia Gold Cup Co-Chair Al Griffin Jr.
Dr. Griffin said the high-quality video will serve three important functions of the NSA: Integrity, safety, and market growth. “Fundamentally, the principal reason for our request for proposals is the integrity of our racing. Our stewards require high-quality video to assure that the races are being run fairly and that the playing field is level for all participants.
“The stewards need these quality images as they make crucial decisions that can involve tens of thousands of dollars in purse money. Moreover, they need to be able to see all views from all cameras at the same time, a capability that they currently do not have in most cases.”
The high-quality video serves purposes beyond the NSA’s regulatory functions. High-quality video is valuable in evaluating safety considerations for both horses and jockeys. “Our Safety Committee, headed by Dr. Reynolds Cowles, analyzes the safety aspects of all races, and high-quality video reveals nuances that are not readily apparent in standard video,” Dr. Griffin said.
The NSA places all race videos on its website, nationalsteeplechase.com, and high-quality images provide opportunities for growth in the sport. “High-definition video captures the excitement and vitality of our sport,” Dr. Griffin said. “Visitors to our website will have access to that excitement through our video archive.
“Some race meets have begun providing live video streaming of their races. A high-definition image will enhance the video streaming and allow us to attract new participants through presentations that are of the highest quality.”
