Irv Naylor’s One Lucky Lady, winner of last year’s Peapack Stakes, has been nominated for a shot at a second straight victory in the Far Hills Races’ $50,000 contest for fillies and mares on Saturday, Oct. 15.
The Peapack, at 2 1/8 miles over National Fences, is the traditional kickoff race for American Steeplechasing’s richest race meet, with $700,000 on the line in seven races. The afternoon’s feature is the $350,000 Grand National (Gr. 1). First post time is 1 p.m.
Trained by Cyril Murphy at Naylor’s Butler, Md., farm, One Lucky Lady has won two of three starts this year, including a victory in the Iroquois Steeplechase’s Margaret Currey Henley Stakes for fillies and mares.
The second and third finishers from the Henley also have been nominated to the Peapack. Riverdee Stable’s The Grange finished a half-length behind One Lucky Lady in the Henley on May 14. She is trained by Kate Dalton.
Michael Moran’s Ivy Mills, third in the Henley, locked up last year’s female championship when she bested One Lucky Lady in the Colonial Cup’s Springdale Stakes. She’s a member of leading trainer Jack Fisher’s stable.
Owner-trainer F. Hill Parker’s Get Ready Set Goes, winner of Saratoga Race Course’s $75,000 Mrs. Ogden Phipps Stakes in August, is among the 11 nominees. Finishing third behind Get Ready Set Goes was Peapack nominee Willow U, who previously was fifth in the Henley.
Owned by Check Mark Stables, Willow U is trained by Richard Valentine, who also nominated Jacqueline Ohrstrom’s Lady Yeats, a winner in England early in the year. The five-year-old mare would be making her first U.S. start over fences.
Here are the 11 nominees for the $50,000 Peapack Stakes for fillies and mares. The number in parentheses at the end of each profile is the horse’s National Steeplechase Association rating.
