Woodslane Farm’s Overwhelming stalked the early pace of Street Fight, took charge on Saratoga Race Course’s final turn, and drew away to an easy 8 1/4-length victory in a $65,000 allowance hurdle on Wednesday, opening day of jump racing at the historic New York track.
Beverly R. Steinman’s Perfect Union finished second, and Kwacha picked up third money in the race for maiden hurdle winners. Trained by Jack Fisher and ridden by Sean McDermott, Overwhelming went off as the 2.20-to-1 favorite and ran the 2 1/16-mile distance in 3:47.76 on firm turf.
Overwhelming looked to have a fight on his hands approaching the final obstacle as Cul Baire moved into a striking position under Paddy Young. But the Irish-bred misjudged the fence and fell, leaving Overwhelming with no challenge to the finish line.
