Augustin Stables’ Radio Flyer, always prominent on the front end, drew clear in the stretch to a three-length victory in the $15,000 Willowdale Steeplechase, the featured contest of the 20th annual Willowdale Steeplechase in Kennett Square, Pa., on Sunday, May 13.
Ridden by Darren Nagle, Radio Flyer set the pace with Northwoods Stable’s Battle Op, the valiant runner-up in the Maryland Hunt Cup. They were joined at the last fence by Gerry L. Brewster’s Brands Hatch, ridden by Jackson Roberts. Trained by Richard Valentine, Radio Flyer drew away from his opponents through the run-in, and Brands Hatch came home second, two lengths ahead of Battle Op. Radio Flyer ran the Willowdale Steeplechase’s 3 1/2 miles over its unique course in 7:28.60 on firm ground.
