Gregory S. Bentley’s Rainbows for Luck made a strong move to toward the lead on the final turn and held off Grinding Speed to prevail by three-quarters of a length in the $15,000 Legacy Chase, the featured race of the 12th annual Races at Shawan Downs at Hunt Valley, Md., on Saturday, Sept. 29. Dakota Slew finished third, 1 1/4 lengths farther back, in the open allowance race over timber fences.
Trained by Edward L. Graham, Rainbows for Luck notched his second victory of the year and ran the Legacy Chase’s 3 1/8 miles in 7:06.20 on firm ground under Jody Petty. An 11-year-old Benny the Dip gelding who was stakes-placed on the flat in Canada, Rainbows for Luck previously had won a timber claiming race at the Willowdale Steeplechase in Kennett Square, Pa., on May 13.
