Steeplechase racing returns to South Carolina on Saturday for the 24th edition of the Aiken Fall Races, and up-and-coming horses will be featured in two of the afternoon’s four jump races.
The first race at 1 p.m. carries a $20,000 purse and will highlight a full field of maidens competing over National Fences at 2 1/4 miles. The day’s other featured $20,000 maiden race will place the spotlight on fillies and mares racing over the same 2 1/4-mile distance.
The maiden races each attracted full fields of 10 entries, and the afternoon’s other two races, a $15,000 maiden claimer and a $15,000 conditioned claiming race, each attracted nine entries.
Paddy Young, currently leading the race for the champion jockey title, has mounts in each of the four jump races and is looking to maintain his seven-race advantage over Jack Doyle, who leads the battle for the championship by purse earnings by almost $70,000. Young, in pursuit of a fifth title by wins, ranks second by purses.
