The Fields Stable’s Sarah Joyce will attempt to win her third straight $50,000 Margaret Currey Henley Stakes on Saturday when she meets 10 other females at the 78th annual Iroquois Steeplechase at Nashville’s Percy Warner Park.
The Margaret Currey Henley will be one of the supporting stakes races for the Iroquois meet, which features the $150,000 Calvin Houghland Iroquois (Gr. 1). Purses for the meet total $450,000, the largest of the National Steeplechase Association spring season. First post time is 1 p.m. CDT.
A seven-year-old Irish-bred, Sarah Joyce will be making her first jumps start since last year’s half-length victory over Inverness in the 2¼-mile Margaret Currey Henley. Trainer Elizabeth Voss named Jack Doyle to again ride Sarah Joyce, who finished fifth in a Queen’s Cup Steeplechase training flat race on April 27.
KMSN Stable’s Inverness will make another attempt to defeat Sarah Joyce. Trained by Jonathan Sheppard, she finished third in a Carolina Cup maiden hurdle for females on March 30. Keri Brion will ride.
Gil Johnston’s Amnicalola won that maiden hurdle, and she will be attempting to move forward into top company in the Henley. Trainer Jack Fisher named Michael Mitchell to ride.
Joseph F. Fowler Jr.’s Down Royal will be making her first start since last year’s Iroquois meet, in which she finished third in an allowance hurdle against males. Bernie Dalton will be aboard the five-year-old mare for his wife, trainer Kate Dalton.
Owner-trainer Bethany Baumgardner will ride her Mavourneen, who finished second in Foxfield Spring’s Daniel Van Clief Memorial Handicap on April 27. The Virginia meet also featured a maiden hurdle for females, and Beverly R. Steinman’s Market Alley will attempt to step up from a 1¼-length victory. Barry Foley rides for trainer Doug Fout.
