Andre W. Brewster’s Selection Sunday put on his Sunday best for the $25,000 Charleston Cup and waltzed away to a 7 1/4-length victory in the optional allowance hurdle. Mrs. Cary W. Jackson’s Northern Bay took second, and Stone Farm’s Mandola finished fourth.
Completing the order of finish were Virginia’s Friendship Farm’s Cognashene and Boudinot Farms’ Harmony Bay. Ridden by Sean McDermott, Selection Sunday completed the Charleston Cup’s 2 1/4 miles in 4:17 on firm turf at Stono Ferry Race Course.
Selection Sunday’s victory virtually assured Jack Fisher his third straight title as champion trainer. With 21 victories on the season, he has a seven-race lead over Richard Valentine. The season’s final meet, Saturday’s Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup in Camden, S.C., has a tentative schedule of six races.
Fisher, who also won a maiden claiming hurdle with Arcadia Stable’s Three Hundred, tightened the battle for the money-won title. He now has more than $720,000 in 2014 purses and trails Valentine by less than $8,000.
Willie McCarthy rode Magalen O. Bryant’s Kings Grant to victory in a maiden hurdle and is assured of wearing the jockey crown for the first time. He has 23 wins, nine more than Paddy Young and Ross Geraghty.
