The Fields Stable's Sarah Joyce and jockey Jack Doyle head for the finish line in the Margaret Currey Henley TOD MARKS PHOTO
Two of steeplechase racing’s top female competitors, Sarah Joyce and One Lucky Lady, will meet on the race course for a second time this month in the Fair Hill Races’ new stakes race, the $50,000 Iris Ann Coggins Memorial, on Saturday.
The 2 1/4-mile race over National Fences will anchor a nine-race program at the Northern Maryland race course. All nine races—two on the flat, one over timber fences, and the remainder over National Fences—have packed fields, with waiting lists for three of them.
First post time is 1 p.m., and pari-mutuel wagering will be offered on all races.
The Fields Stable’s Sarah Joyce and Irv Naylor’s One Lucky Lady met in the Iroquois Steeplechase’s Margaret Currey Henley Stakes on May 13, and Sarah Joyce definitely got the better of that contest.
Ridden by Jack Doyle, Sarah Joyce drew away to an impressive 3 1/4-length victory in the Henley, her second win of the season after defeating males in a Queen’s Cup ratings handicap. One Lucky Lady set the Henley’s early pace but wilted under pressure and finished third.
One Lucky Lady will be seeking to regain the peak form of her 2015 and 2016 seasons. The British-bred mare won Far Hills’ Peapack Stakes in 2015 and the Henley the following spring.
Doyle will again ride Sarah Joyce for trainer Elizabeth Voss, and Sean McDermott will be aboard One Lucky Lady for trainer Cyril Murphy.
Also coming out of the Henley is Amy Taylor Rowe’s For Goodness Sake, who collected fifth money for trainer Leslie Young.
Beverly R. Steinman’s Pure Deal easily won a Foxfield Spring maiden hurdle for females on April 29. Ross Geraghty will ride.
Here is the field for the $50,000 Iris Ann Coggins Memorial. The horses’ National Steeplechase Association ratings are in parentheses at the end of their profiles.
