Several timber stakes winners and promising contenders will line up Saturday, April 12, for the historic My Lady’s Manor, the kickoff race of the Maryland timber triple.
The My Lady’s Manor program in Monkton attracted full fields for its four races, including a split edition of the John Rush Streett Memorial maiden timber contest. Also on the program is the John D. Schapiro Memorial, which is restricted to amateur apprentice jockeys.
The three-mile, $30,000 My Lady’s Manor kicks off the action at 1:30 p.m. A well-balanced field is headed by Michael T. Wharton’s Grinding Speed, who fell at the second to last fence in last year’s My Lady’s Manor while on the lead. He came right back to win the Virginia Gold Cup in his next start. Trainer Alicia Murphy named Mark Beecher to ride.
Returning for a chance at a second straight triumph in the My Lady’s Manor is Moonsox, owned by Nelson & Traveller Stable. Trainer Kevin Boniface named his son, K. Fritz Boniface, to ride the Mojave Moon gelding, who was unplaced in four subsequent starts last year.
Maryland-based trainer Jack Fisher will send out a strong team for the My Lady’s Manor. Straight to It, owned by Sheila J. Williams and Andre Brewster, came home second in last year’s My Lady’s Manor and finished in the money in his subsequent starts, including a second in the International Gold Cup and a victory in the Springdale timber allowance at the Colonial Cup. Jeff Murphy will be aboard the 2012 New Jersey Hunt Cup winner.
Champion jockey Paddy Young will be aboard Sonny Via’s Worried Man, who won last year’s Mason Houghland Memorial at Nashville’s Iroquois Steeplechase for Fisher.
Irvin S. Naylor, who returned to the top of the timber owner ranks last year, will field Tax Ruling, a Grade 1 winner over hurdles who made a successful transition to timber last year. The veteran won Shawan Downs’ Legacy Chase over timber and was third in the International Gold Cup. Trained by Billy Meister, Tax Ruling will be ridden by James Slater.
