Three Grade 1 races highlight a National Steeplechase Association summer pari-mutuel racing season at five East Coast racetracks. In all, the summer schedule offers more than $1.5-million in purses.
All three top-rated races will be offered at New York Racing Association tracks, with the first two—the $125,000 A. P. Smithwick Memorial and the $150,000 New York Turf Writers Cup Handicap—at historic Saratoga Race Course. The third Grade 1 race, the $150,000 Lonesome Glory Handicap, will be staged at Belmont Park on Sept. 22.
The Smithwick Memorial will be run at 2 1/16 miles on Aug. 4, and the New York Turf Writers will be at 2 3/8 miles on Aug. 25.
The Saratoga schedule, with scheduled purses of almost $1-million, begins July 27, and jump races will be staged every Wednesday and Thursday of America’s premier summer race meet.
The Saratoga schedule also includes two novice stakes, the Jonathan Kiser on July 28 and Michael G. Walsh on Aug. 18, and two stakes races for fillies and mares, the Mrs. Ogden Phipps on Aug. 11 and the Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords on Sept. 1. Each stakes race carries a $75,000 purse.
The summer schedule kicks off June 17 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., and visits Parx Racing in suburban Philadelphia on July 10 and 12.
Jump racing will make three visits to Suffolk Downs in East Boston, Mass., on July 9, Aug. 6, and Sept. 3.
The $75,000 William Entenmann Memorial Novice Stakes will be run on the program with the Lonesome Glory on Thursday, Sept. 22.
