Colonial Downs’ steeplechase races continued to attract strong entries, with 10 entered for Saturday’s $30,000 maiden hurdle for fillies and mares and nine in the entry box for a $20,000 ratings handicap for horses ranked at 110 or lower. They will be the first and third races, with a 5 p.m. first post time.
For the ratings handicap, Irv Naylor’s Av A Word, coming off victories in an Aiken Spring maiden claimer and a Radnor Hunt Races ratings handicap. Third in the Radnor race was Moorland, who moved up to win Colonial’s $25,000 ratings handicap last Saturday.
Graham Watters will ride for trainer Cyril Murphy.
Turks Head Turf’s Brooklyn Speights, finished a close second to Moorland in a Middleburg Spring maiden claiming hurdle and won a similar race at Radnor. Leading jockey Michael Mitchell will be in the saddle for trainer Fenneka Bentley.
Taking the Lead Stable’s Lead Investor, trained by Jonathan Sheppard, won his last two jumps starts by open lengths at Foxfield Spring and Willowdale. Gerard Galligan will ride.
The maiden hurdle attracted three competitors from the Iroquois Steeplechase’s $50,000 Margaret Currey Henley Stakes on May 11.
Riverdee Stable’s Snowie Hill, a full sister to 2016 novice and female champion Get Ready Set Goes, finished sixth; KMSN Stable’s Inverness was seventh; and owner-trainer William Wofford’s Choklitcoverdonut was eighth.
