Two’s Company surged through the Shawan Downs stretch on Saturday to score a head victory over Zanclus in the $25,000 Brown Advisory Legacy Chase. Straight to It finished third, 3 1/2 lengths behind Zanclus, and reigning timber champion Grinding Speed was fourth, 8 1/2 lengths farther back.
Owned by Bruton Street-US, Two’s Company ran the Legacy Chase’s three miles over timber fences in 6:04.80 on turf rated as firm at the suburban Baltimore course. Both Two’s Company and Sheila Williams’ and Northwoods Stables’ Straight to It are trained by Jack Fisher.
Jockey Sean McDermott placed Two’s Company in the middle of the nine-horse field as Puller and Super Saturday set the early pace. Irv Naylor’s Super Saturday was beginning to tire as he jumped the last fence on the lead, and Sara Collette’s homebred Zanclus moved to the fore under Kieran Norris. Two’s Company, fifth at the last fence, found his best stride late and arrived just in time to snatch the victory in the fall’s first timber race.
Alice Mills, an English jockey riding for Fisher this fall, guided DASH Stable’s Time Out to a 3 3/4-length victory in Shawan’s $25,000 Ratings Handicap. Balance the Budget finished second, and All for Us was third.
