Bruton Street-US’s 2016 timber champion Two’s Company heads a highly competitive field of 11 for Sunday’s $35,000 Willowdale Steeplechase, the featured race of the 27th annual Willowdale Steeplechase meet in Kennett Square, Pa.
The traditional Mother’s Day program kicks off with a 1:30 p.m. first post time.
Two’s Company was denied a chance to run last Sunday when the Winterthur Races were canceled, and trainer Jack Fisher wheeled him back into the 3½-mile Willowdale Steeplechase. In his initial 2019 start, the Irish-bred finished third in the Middleburg Hunt Cup on April 20.
Two’s Company closed out his 2018 season with a five-length victory in the New Jersey Hunt Cup at the Far Hills Races in October.
Fisher also entered Bruton Street-US’s Lemony Bay, who also had been entered for the Winterthur Bowl after a third in the My Lady’s Manor on April 13.
Two recent winners from Fisher’s stable, Gil Johnston’s Hanno and Hyggelig Haven’s Political Theatre, also were entered. Political Theatre won a timber maiden at My Lady’s Manor, and Hanno got up late to take the Queen’s Cup steeplethon over mixed obstacles on April 27. Quinn Scala rides Hanno.
Trainer Todd Wyatt entered wife Blair’s Witor, who finished second in the My Lady’s Manor. Eric Poretz has the mount.
Monstaleur and Grand Manan, dead-heat winners of the 2016 Willowdale Steeplechase, were entered for the race, which is limited to amateur jockeys. Black and Blue Stable’s Monstaleur stumbled at the last fence of the Grand National on April 20 and unseated trainer-jockey Forrest Kelly.
Grand Manan, the probable pacesetter, tired and was pulled up in the Middleburg Hunt Cup. He stumbled and lost his rider in the 2018 Willowdale Steeplechase.
