The Far Hills Races attracted several full fields for its seven races on Saturday. In addition to 11 entrants for the $250,000 Grand National, the $75,000 Peapack Stakes for fillies and mares had 12 entrants, and the Foxbrook Champion Hurdle was split into two divisions. Here are previews of those three races. Also on the card are the $25,000 Gladstone Stakes for three-year-olds and the $25,000 New Jersey Hunt Cup, a timber allowance race.
Full field for Peapack
Clarke Ohrstrom’s Kisser N Run will face an uphill battle when she attempts a second straight victory in the $75,000 Peapack Stakes at the Far Hills Races on Saturday, Oct. 19. In all, 12 fillies and mares were entered for the Peapack, a 2 1/8-mile race over National Fences that kicks off the rich Far Hills program. First post time in 1 p.m. at Moorland Farms in central New Jersey.
Trained by Richard Valentine, Kisser N Run savored the soft ground at Far Hills last year and drew away to a 3 3/4-length score. Robbie Walsh, who missed last year’s Peapack because of injury, has the riding assignment.
This year, she will face a much larger field of opponents, many of whom have stakes credentials. Several of them finished ahead of Kisser N Run in two key Saratoga Race Course stakes races, the $75,000 Mrs. Ogden Phipps, in which Kisser N Run finished fourth, and the $75,000 Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords, in which she was sixth.
Heading that group is Gregory Hawkins’ The Grey Express, winner of the Mrs. Jeffords after a second-place finish in the Mrs. Phipps. She most recently tried Grade 1 competition in Belmont Park’s Lonesome Glory Stakes on Sept. 19 and finished eighth. Trained by Racing Hall of Fame member Janet Elliot, The Grey Express will be ridden by 2012 champion jockey Ross Geraghty.
Jack Fisher, the reigning champion trainer on the National Steeplechase Association circuit, is loaded with talent for the Peapack. Heading his threesome is Arcadia Stable’s Take Her Tothe Top, who went to the top in the Mrs. Phipps with a late surge that carried her past The Grey Express. Xavier Aizpuru will ride the five-year-old More Than Ready mare, who finished third in the Mrs. Jeffords.
Arcadia also will send out Opera Heroine, who finished sixth in the Mrs. Phipps on Aug. 8 and fifth in the Mrs. Jeffords. The veteran Partner’s Hero mare, winner of the 2011 edition of the Mrs. Phipps, will be ridden by Sean Flanagan.
Completing the Fisher threesome is Maya Charli, owned by the trainer’s Kingfisher Farm. She scored a seven-length victory over Kisser N Run in the $50,000 Georgia Cup at the Atlanta Steeplechase on April 13 but was pulled up in the Margaret Currey Henley Stakes at Nashville’s Iroquois Steeplechase on May 11. Jeff Murphy will ride.
Prominent Virginia trainer Doug Fout will saddle Magalen O. Bryant’s Well Fashioned, who finished third in the Mrs. Phipps and fourth in the Mrs. Jeffords. A multiple stakes winner, Well Fashioned won the Henley by a nose over Kisser N Run. Willie McCarthy will be in the saddle.
Racing Hall of Fame member Jonathan Sheppard will send out his Cubist, the 2012 Mrs. Jeffords winner who is looking to regain her best form. She was pulled up in the Mrs. Phipps and finished last of eight in the Mrs. Jeffords on Aug. 29. Darren Nagle has the mount.
Leading owner Irvin S. Naylor will be represented by recent import Bittersweetheart, who has won a hurdle allowance at Southwell in England in April. Three-time champion jockey Paddy Young will ride for his wife, trainer Leslie Young.

Trainer Jack Fisher named Jeff Murphy for a return engagement on the Irish-bred gelding, who scored by three-quarters of a length in the Entenmann, which like the Foxbrook is limited to horses in their first seasons of racing over fences.
Both divisions of Saturday’s Foxbrook are highly competitive, and Staying On will be face eight opponents for the $45,000 first-place money. Bill Pape will have two challengers, Bluegrass Summer and Grand Tier, both of whom are trained by Racing Hall of Fame member Jonathan Sheppard.
