Wally Pinkard’s Won Wild Bird set the pace with Sand Box Rules before drawing away to a 4 1/4-length victory in the $35,000 Pennsylvania Hunt Cup on Sunday, Nov. 4. Mary Motion’s Woodmont finished third in the fall timber classic in Unionville, and Bug Eyed Willy checked in fourth. With Roddy Mackenzie in the saddle, Won Wild Bird ran the four-mile distance in 10:51.60 on turf rated as good.
Kinross Farm’s Sand Box Rules and jockey Christopher Read set a laggard early pace in company with Won Wild Bird, with the remainder of the field close behind them. The two pacesetters jumped the last fence together, but the 10-year-old mare opened daylight in the run to the finish line. Woodmont was seven lengths farther back. The Pennsylvania Hunt Cup was the first victory of the year in five starts for Won Wild Bird, who is trained by Regina Welsh. Her prior victory was the Radnor Hunt Cup in May 2011.
